Question one: The Messages of John the Baptist in Luke 3: 1-18
John the Baptist preached about Baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The baptism of water done by John the Baptist was in preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ who would eventually baptize people using fire and the Holy Spirit (Luke 3: 16). The other message by John the Baptist was that he warned the people of God’s judgment. The religious leaders had only focused on external observance of the law instead of focusing on inner righteousness. John the Baptist wanted them to demonstrate fruits worthy of repentance.
He also wanted them to stop being hypocrites (Brood of vipers) and start living a righteous life (Luke 3: 8). The religious leaders had also focused on the idea that they were descendants of Abraham and they thought that they would therefore not be punished. John the Baptist warned them of God’s judgment and stated that God could as well raise descendants of Abraham from stones.
John the Baptist also announced the coming of the Messiah who would come as a judge with a winnowing fan to clean his threshing flour (Luke 3: 17). He preached about social justice and said that the rich should share with the poor. He emphasized the need for honesty and fairness. He also warned the soldiers from accusing people falsely (Luke 3: 14). .Besides, he condemned over-taxation, corruption, and taking of bribes.
The messages of John the Baptist are useful to the ministry in various ways. The messages help clarify that baptism is very important to Christians and they, therefore, pose a need by church ministers to preach baptism for the forgiveness of sins. Additionally, the message makes it clear that church leaders should condemn evil deeds in society without fear. Finally, they inform church leaders of the need to inform the people that God will judge them for their wrong actions.
Question 2: Lessons learnt from the message of John the Baptist and their applications to the ministry
The message of John the Baptist challenges me personally as a church minister to apply the teachings in my own life by making sure I maintain high levels of fairness and integrity when dealing with other people. It also challenges me to sincerely repent my sins and ask God for forgiveness. This is because the teachings are clear that God will punish human beings if they indulge in wrongful actions. Additionally, the teachings challenge me to warn non-believers of God’s coming judgment. Besides, I learnt that I should condemn all evil actions without fear. The most important lesson that I learnt is that Baptism is a very important aspect of any Christians life and therefore all Christians should strive to get baptized.
How Church ministers can apply the messages of John the Baptist in the ministry
Just like John the Baptist, church ministers learn that they need to have a strong desire to keep on preaching Gods message to the world and that they should also prioritize performing Gods work (Burnett, 2013). John the Baptist had committed to devoting himself to doing God’s work throughout his life. Despite the many distractions that church leaders may face while fulfilling this mission, they should not let any obstacles affect their performance of God’s work.
Additionally, church ministers learn that they should help other believers to be prepared for the second coming of Jesus Christ (Kazmierski, 1987). Church ministers should preach about repentance and also baptize the other believers as a way of preparing them for the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Besides, church ministers also learn that they should not shy away from standing for what is right. John the Baptist often criticized the wrongdoing of the people and wanted them to stop being hypocrites (Brood of Vipers).
