Male and female roles in society are built and strengthened by mass media, particularly film and television. Gender portrayal in the media is critical because individuals learn gender roles through socialization. Masculinity, like feminine identity, is a constructible aspect, and fictitious male characters in movies and television shows transmit messages about Masculinity to the viewer. The male representation in television shows and movies was contrasted with this assumption in this study. The subject of how male characters are portrayed in two distinct forms of mass media in Turkey was investigated.
Furthermore, the research is interested in whether “masculine representation perpetuates the prevailing patriarchal male image or develops an alternative male model.” The reception analysis approach was used in this study, and in-depth interviews with audiences with various demographic characteristics were conducted (Shafik &Viola, 170). The hero yearns for the freedom to go, confronting persons, groups, and situations who stand in his way; in some ways, it is this tension or struggle that propels the story forward.
Moral and physical power are confused in various ways, including the soldier’s self-sacrificial heroism, the Western hero’s mastery of nature, and the action hero’s heightened/fantastical physical skills. Each function in various but related ways across borders, a theme that serves to emphasize the male hero’s mobility (Awwal, 32). Let us look at some of the visual and narrative methods used to define Masculinity in these generic places. I seek to highlight both continuities and discontinuities within and across different genres when conceptualizing problems like violence and freedom of movement, paternalism, obligation, hierarchies, and cooperation. While there is a lot of fun to be had in the genre, there are also some rather obvious issues that I wanted to investigate.
For starters, the great bulk of action/adventure movies feature white male protagonists. Second, women and ancillary characters are frequently treated as things to be conquered by these protagonists. Masculinity, as defined by Gramsci’s hegemony concept, refers to the hierarchical relationships between distinct masculinities. Connell states that gender has been created in various ways in different countries and times, particularly in a setting such as a school or a workplace where we may meet these masculinities.
