Executive Summary

This report has aimed at offering me an opportunity to explore my skills and gaps, thus I could work on and come up as an effective performer and a leader as well. This report is based on an event, where I played the role of a team leader and found some gaps in me. Thus, working on those gaps has been carried out further in this report presented in below sections identifying that I need to grab skills such as social skill, time management and others.

Introduction

This assignment aims at exploring my leadership and management capabilities that I have applied in two areas such as while working individually and working as a teammate. Exploring these two capabilities would be giving me a scope to identify the gaps that exist between the capabilities I have and the capabilities an effective manager and leader needs to have. While carrying out this assignment, I need to use Gibbs Reflective cycle as a theoretical model to evaluate the management and leadership capabilities I have.

Gibbs reflective cycle: Use of Gibbs Reflective cycle as a framework helps a learner achieving a higher level in their thought processes and also boosts their lifelong learning skills (1). Thus, using this framework would help me to enhance my lifelong learning skills aimed to be an effective leader all the time

Description: This phase is about the event a learner wishes to reflect upon (2). In this context, I wish to reflect on the event, my last project, where I need to handle a team of five members and each of them belongs to a different cultural background. However, the most challenging expectation that the management puts upon me is to submit this project on deadline. This event is all about evaluating my experience as a team leader in a challenging situation, where most of the members are unknown to me with a culturally different context along with Deadline.

Feelings: Handling a team was not a challenge for me, however, the team composition with the nature of the project made me stressed, challenged, worried and scared of experiencing a failure situation. Leadership at some level is about creating other leaders (3). I tried to apply this concept, however, my feelings and thoughts to make this project successful bounded me to overcome the challenges I was experiencing at that time. I felt that leading a completely new team is a challenge for me and working on deadline projects was itself a challenge for me. Thus, I thought that before creating new leaders emerging from this team, I needed to focus on “deadline”, projects submission and the members skill development.

Evaluation: This overall experience I found was challenging because the only good thing that happened to me was to handle a team, although various bad things that could not work according to my expectations such as every five members were inexperienced, of different culture, and deadline assigned to the project. Leadership during trying times need psychological and cultural protections for the employees (4). Thus, after evaluating this journey, three team members tried their best to contribute to this project, although the other two members showed an adaptive approach towards teamwork that led to the project to a critical situation. An overall, my experiencing of handling a new team with time constraint did not go well as per my management’s expectations.

Analysis: Handling a team of five members went well, I maintained a communicative and interactive environment with them and this went well because of my experience of five months of team leadership. Rest things such as meeting the deadline, making every member involved in this project and fulfilling the management’s expectations could not go well. The reason behind it is that I failed to handle those two members having a different approach and attitude towards teamwork. I failed to inspire and convince them to work efficiently.

Conclusion: I can conclude that there are some areas where I need to bring improvements to lead a team irrespective of its nature. This journey made me learn about my weaknesses and capabilities as a team leader.

As an individual performer, I find myself comparatively competent when it comes to performing as a teammate, although both require some advanced skills to perform as the most efficient performer.
