The African American community in the early 1950s were people that lived in fear of racial discrimination & segregation from their majority-white communities. They had no proper channels of voicing their concerns, blacks could not offer services to their government, they lived a poor life and the majority lived of suffering. According to (Foner, 776) students stepped into the limelight of social change in the early 1960s where they instituted a student nonviolent coordinating committee (SNCC) to spearhead for racial justice and take control of blacks empowerment programs aimed at ending cultural and racial segregation. Stokely Carmichael took over the SNCC leadership that headed the Black power movement, which sought to put to an end mistreatment of the black people. Therefore, I would agree with Carmichael statement on what is good for the blacks is good for American democracy because;
First, social injustices that brought fights for freedom of expression and assembly are key pillars in every democratic nation, these two rights were very important to the black communities, implementing these rights and allowing black people to assemble and express their ideas freely would have heightened democracy within the American society. According to (Foner, 747) in his chapter the daybreak of freedom” there was an emergency of movement for racial justice in all-black churches of the south which gained the support of their Northern liberals. This movement brought undesirable and unwelcomed global attention to the countries racial policies. Civil rights movements begun to advance and fight for the basic rights of black people as an American citizens.
Secondly, blacks desired to have equal chances of electing their representation in both houses of senate and parliament, they desired to have equal resource distribution shared by the government, they wanted to be given equal rights towards employment opportunities because the majority of black people were subjected to abject poverty where incase of economic recession blacks were the first to be sacked and miss their jobs, this desire of equal chance was good for cohesive integration which sought to promote an ideology of a peaceful nation. Previously black people were denied an equal chance with the whites to own or lease residential housing, this was evidenced by a case where suburban homes remained to be entitled to white people claiming it to be a private belongings. According to (Heather, 58) a fair housing committee was constituted to advocate for anti-discriminatory actions that required all citizens to be treated equally regardless of race, color, and national originality. There were also civil rights that required federal agencies, state and local grantees to minimize housing segregation and to proactively allocate resources to all people regardless of their color or race. The federal government was ordered to allocate resources to combat the long-term failure to invest in communities of different colors.
Thirdly, blacks wanted an end to racial discrimination and segregation, segregation was experienced in schools where blacks people were streaked from colleges, public beaches, certain interstate travel buses where symbols of whites and blacks were written at the entry. The blacks were not permitted to any hotel except for lowly jobs, these were also evidenced in a case where Armstrong and other black artists were denied the visitant seat even after performance at the casino. This brought hate between the two races, where one race felt more privileged than the other. Black students went ahead to fight for segregated public beaches in Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi to be opened for all (Foner, 774). They formed a freedom rides group designed to fill buses and travel to states that banned segregation in interstate buses to taste compliance with court orders. These actions were coordinated by the Student Nonviolent coordination committee (SNCC) which was established in the early part of 1960 and 1961.
Conclusion
Democracy dictates that nations should allow their citizens to participate in all state functions without any favors. It supports freedom of expression, freedom to assemble, and or equal rights in electing representatives or political leaders. It promotes a condition where all people are equal before God and law. However, black people in the American society which consisted of majority whites felt left behind when it came to matters that dealt with governance. Black people were made to feel like they were not part of the American society, this made them feel segregated and excluded. All that blacks wanted was a system that was free from racial segregation, a system that promoted equality in all sectors of governance, and a state in which people would be elected not based on their skin color but by their manners and characters. All these to me were good and if promoted would promote democracy in America and thats why I support the statement made by Stokely Carmichael.
